The highest earning movies of the year might not get a lot of love on Oscar night, but you can always bet on the technical awards, like visual effects, to spread some of the wealth around.

This year is no exception with "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallow - Part 2," "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides"—the three top grossing films of the year—all making it to the list of ten films up for the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.

Of course, here at Splash Page, we're rooting for two of the other nominees: "Captain America" and "X-Men: First Class."

Here is the complete list of potential nominees:

» "Captain America: The First Avenger"
» "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2"
» "Hugo"
» "Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol"
» "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides"
» "Real Steel"
» "Rise of the Planet of the Apes"
» "Transformers: Dark of the Moon"
» "The Tree of Life"
» "X-Men: First Class"

To the dismay of the series' fans, this may be one of the few chances for an Oscar win for "Harry Potter." Warner Bros. mounted a big "For your consideration" campaign, but it has yet to yield any major awards buzz outside of the technical categories.

To decide the final five nominees, the members of the visual effects group of the academy will view 10-minute excerpts from each film and vote. The final five will be unveiled with the rest of the Academy Award nominations on January 24.

Which of these films do you want to see take home the Academy Award for best visual effects? Let us know in the comments below and on Twitter!
